For 14 years, Kunta Kinte Celebrations Inc. has sponsored two dynamic events in the Annapolis area highlighting the contributions of African Americans and other minority groups to society.

These two events are the Annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival at the Anne Arunel County Fair Grounds and the Annual Kunta Kinte Arrival Commemoration Ceremony on the Annapolis City Dock. These events have provided opportunities for participants to see, hear, experience and witness national and local celebrities such as Alex Haley, author of Roots. The Van Dykes, a local band that achieved national recognition, several dance groups from Africa on tour in America, and diplomats from several African countries, to name a few. In addition, local artists, musicians, vendors and nonprofit groups have all benefited financially from KKC events during the past 14 years. Neither rain nor storms have prevented us from continuing these two quality events or expanding our efforts through collaboration with others such as the Chesapeake Children's Museum.

While government funding for the arts is constantly decreasing, cost for events such as the Annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival and the Arrival Commemoration Ceremony have increased every year. While our collaboration with organizations such as the Chesapeake Children's Museum has been a tremendous success, it has only pointed out the need to collaborate with other agencies such as the Stanton Center and others. While the scholarships we have provided during the past four years has been much appreciated the recipients, it has also made us keenly aware of how much more is needed.
